Brief about Samsul Mannan

Capt. Mannan is a distinguished maritime consultant with a rich blend of academic expertise and practical industry experience, bringing a comprehensive approach to maritime education, training & consultancy. Throughout his career, which spans various roles in the maritime sector including maritime educator, trainer, pilot, consultant, and assistant harbour master, he tried to promote safety culture in the maritime industry.

He has served as a simulator trainer and nautical instructor in the United Kingdom (UK) & Bangladesh delivering MCA-approved short courses including GMDSS, ECDIS, ENS, Tanker FAM, TASCO, ChemCo, HELM (O), HELM(M), NAEST(O) and NAEST(M) courses. As a certified trainer under STCW-2010, MLC-2006, and ISM, with additional qualifications in Piracy Awareness Training for Seafarers, and Level 5 diploma in education & training from UK, Capt. Mannan possesses the knowledge and skills essential for preparing the next generation of maritime professionals. In recent years, he has played a key role in the development and approval of short courses from the MCA, gaining a deep understanding of curriculum standards and academic quality assurance.

Before transitioning to academic roles, Capt. Mannan spent eight years as an assistant harbour master cum pilot at Chittagong Port Authority, where he was responsible for handling over 4,500 vessels, conducting deep-sea pilotage operations, training junior pilots, and making new policies for Port Operation. His earlier career at sea included nine years aboard merchant ships, eventually rising to the rank of captain. These extensive experiences have provided Capt. Mannan with profound insights into the maritime industry, which he now incorporates into his teaching, consultancy, and research activities.

Professionally Capt. Mannan holds Master Mariner and Grade-1 pilot licence. Additionally, he possesses an MSc in Maritime Affairs from the World Maritime University, where his dissertation on stakeholder engagement in Marine Spatial Planning in Bangladesh earned him the prestigious Lloyd’s Maritime Academy Best Dissertation Award. Besides, he possesses an MBA in Human Resource Management, showcasing his ability to blend technical maritime knowledge with leadership and organizational skills. His research interests, particularly in maritime safety, simulator training, and port and shipping management, are reflected in his published works and ongoing scholarship.
